For nearly 50 years, DWW+ has been instrumental in breaking barriers for women and nonbinary filmmakers, providing them with the resources, mentorship, and industry access needed to transition into high-profile careers. Alumni of this program have gone on to direct acclaimed feature films and television series, proving the power of investing in underrepresented voices.

In today’s political climate, where the erasure of Black history is being legislated and conversations about systemic racism are being actively silenced, films like The Inheritance are critical acts of resistance. This film not only uncovers hidden truths but demands that we acknowledge the ways history continues to shape our present. It challenges the illusion of progress and exposes how racism is not just a relic of the past—it evolves, embeds itself in institutions, and resurfaces in new forms.

As the proof of concept for Wade in the Water, The Inheritance lays the groundwork for the feature’s larger themes of ancestral memory, psychological horror, and survival against forces both seen and unseen.
